April Gates - Blackbird Pottery

After colourful and long meanderings in travel, work and education, April finally answered the call to study ceramics. A lifelong background in image making married a concern for function ~ and Blackbird Pottery was born. April’s graphic and illustrative work has been nationally exhibited, collected and published.

Working mainly in porcelain, elegant yet simple forms are wheel-thrown and hand embellished with imagery pulled from the artist’s rural roots, landscape and history.

With a strong interest in personal, lyrical mark-making, several processes are used to introduce imagery at the greenware state including hand-painted resist, water-etching, inlay, printing with hand-carved stamps, found objects, underglaze washes and pencil to the clay surface.

As faculty at the Haliburton School of the Arts, April teaches within the Ceramics Certificate, the Visual and Creative Arts Diploma and the Summer Arts Programs. As a facilitator, she is passionate about helping others find their voice through artistic exploration. Please contact April to discuss private and custom workshops for yourself or a small group, custom orders, commissions and gift registry. Open by appointment only.
